Director’s Chat

While we begin planning for each summer as soon as the last one ends, February is the month that tells us that summer is really on its way (despite the -10°F temperatures outside).  This is the month when we begin to assemble our staff from a number of high schools and colleges around the Midwest and, in fact, all over the world through our international programs.  This is also the month when we go on the road to meet old and new campers and their families at our pizza and parent information nights.

Camper registrations are coming in daily, and we are already starting to see some camp sessions nearly filled.  Out at camp, we are working on some physical improvement projects in preparation for our Maple Syrup and Family Fun Day at the end of March and for our Open House in June.

It is a very busy – but very exciting – time of the year for us.  We look forward to seeing you soon at one of our upcoming events!

Camp Pizza Extravaganza and Parent Information Nights (Camp P.E.P.I.N.)

Camp Pepin is coming to a location near you (http://www.camppepin.org/informationnights.htm)!  All new and returning campers and parents are welcome to join us any evening below from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. for pizza and to hear what’s happening at camp this summer.  Please RSVP by calling our Camp Office Manager at the Red Wing Family YMCA office at 651-388-4724 so that we know how many pizzas to order!

Join us at YMCA Camp Pepin for our Maple Syrup & Family Fun Day, where we will doing maple syruping demonstrations with trees that we tap right here at camp.  Archery, the Climbing Tower, and Arts & Crafts will also be open.  And, of course, we will be serving pancakes and sausage with real maple syrup.  The event is free, and everyone’s invited to see what camp is all about!  Please RSVP with Joetta at 651-388-4724.

Summer Health Care Professionals Needed

If you are interested in possibly joining our team of weekly volunteer Health Care Coordinators next summer, please contact Camp Pepin at camp@redwingymca.org, or at 715-442-3811.  Health Care Coordinators provide medical service to our campers and staff and receive free room and board while they are here in exchange for their services.  They may also may send a child of their choice to resident camp for free (or receive a discount equal to the price of resident camp towards one of our specialty camps, leadership camps, or trail camps).  We look forward to hearing from you!

Kimmy’s Korner

Hi folks!  It’s Kimmy the Kayaker.

Congratulations to Sam Bohanon of Pine Island, MN - the winner of my January game - who correctly answered this question:

What is Kimmy the Kayaker’s favorite meal in the Dining Hall?

To find out the answer, write the letter of the alphabet that comes right before each letter printed below:

T  Q   B   H   I   F   U   U   J

The answer is: S P A G H E T T I.  Thank you to everyone that played – it was great to hear from you!

My game for February is this:

February’s Photo-of-the-Month (http://www.camppepin.org/photo%20galleries/Photo%20of%20the%20Month/February2008Photo.htm) is a great picture of our 2007 Rails & Trails Biking Camp.  But something in the picture isn’t supposed to be there.  Can you see what it is?

Email your answer to camp@redwingymca.org.  A winner will be drawn from the entries with the correct answer, and he or she will receive a YMCA Camp Pepin Adventure Camp flashlight carabiner from our Camp Store.  The winner’s name and the answer will also be posted in Kimmy’s Korner in the March Issue of The Lakesider.  Anyone can play, including campers, staff, and alumni.  Good luck!
