Director’s Chat
With the arrival of the “warmer” temperatures this week, Lake Pepin (which had already frozen over in December) is now covered with slushy puddles. Although it is still an awe-inspiring lake in the winter, it certainly doesn’t look as inviting as it does in the summer when it is 86 degrees outside. (Doesn’t it just look wonderful in January’s Photo-of-the-Month (http://www.camppepin.org/photo%20galleries/Photo%20of%20the%20Month/January2008Photo.htm)? The boys in the picture thought so!)
Even so, no matter the season, I notice that so many of our campers and guests here at camp are drawn to the lake. Some of the younger ones sprint with their buddies down to the beach with their their bathing suits on and towels trailing behind them. Some sit on the sand with friends and toss pebbles into the water as they watch the sun set behind the bluffs. Some quietly stand alone as they overlook the waterfront area with a cup of morning coffee in hand. Even on cold January days like today, I find myself wandering down to the edge of the lake ice and just taking it all in.
The lakes of Minnesota and Wisconsin have been family gathering places for generations, and Lake Pepin is certainly one-of-a-kind in the Midwest with its native history, its explorers and riverboat travelers, and its towering bluffs. Camp Pepin is fortunate to offer such a beautiful lake as a gathering place for everyone in our camp family, and we look forward to enjoying it with you year after year.
