Summer’s Over, But Staying Active is Year-Round

Today has been one of those days where you know that Fall has arrived.  Here at camp, it has been rainy and chilly and windy – not exactly the best weather to be outside.  But wet and cold weather doesn’t mean the end of staying active.  That’s where your local YMCA comes in.  The great thing about the Y is that you can go swimming even if there’s a foot of snow on the ground.  Or you can shoot some hoops.  Or you can join a sports team.  Even though summer camp winds down each August, the YMCA is just getting started with a brand new season of activities, which keeps the spirit of the Y alive all year-through.  If you haven’t visited your local YMCA, stop by and see what they have for you.  You can also look up YMCA’s all over the country at www.ymca.net.

Got Photos?

We know that we weren’t the only ones taking great pictures this summer.  If you have a photo that you think would be a good candidate for a future Photo-of-the-Month on our website, send it in to us!  If we put it online, we will post your name underneath it as a contributor to our Photo Gallery (after all, all great photographers got their start somewhere).  You can either email a digital picture to camp@redwingymca.org, or you can send a paper photo to us at Camp Pepin, where we can scan it.

Staff Scoop

  • Laura Buelt is enjoying the University of Minnesota – Morris and says that she misses camp, especially when the word “Heepwah” randomly comes to mind.
  • Tasha Lynne Cheever was recently hired at the Marshfield YMCA in childcare.  Congratulations, Tasha Lynne!
  • Ramsay Hogg spent a weekend in Dublin after returning to Scotland and is looking into teaching somewhere in the Middle East (as if Camp Pepin summers aren’t hot enough!).
  • Krista Kunkel will be adding to her studies at the University of Wisconsin – Madison with courses in music, German, and astronomy (the cool stuff!).  After finishing her Zoology degree, she is looking into becoming a Pediatric Nurse (which is also very cool!).
  • Colin McGonigle earned an honours degree from his university and is now looking into the job market.  From Scotland, he has been following the Packers’ yet undefeated season (which the author of this newsletter felt compelled to mention).
  • Manda Vlasak has forsaken the Pacific this Fall to teach in Apple Valley, MN, which she has been very much enjoying.

Wish List

  • An electrician who would be willing to volunteer his/her services to add a couple of outlets and light fixtures to our Challenge Course shed and to our Target Range shed (we already have the materials, but just need a few hours of labor).
  • A landscaper who would be willing to donate up to 6 loads of black earth and volunteer to grade it around our new basketball court
  • A welder who would be willing to volunteer his/her services to help us build new tubular steel soccer goal posts
  • A sandblaster (with a portable sandblasting unit) who would be willing to volunteer his/her services to clean the underside of the Dining Hall's deck
  • Computers (Pentium 4 or faster, desktop or laptop PC’s with USB ports)
  • Flat-panel computer monitors
  • Picnic tables (wood, good condition)
  • Lumber (2x4, 2x6, 4x4, and 6x6 boards, 8-12 feet in length)
  • Chairs (cushioned seat & back)
  • Mini-van (road-worthy, 7 or 8-person capacity)
  • Cross-country skiis (waxless with bottom grooves, any length) and ski poles
  • Bat boxes

Kimmy’s Korner

Hi folks!  It’s Kimmy the Kayaker.

Here was September’s game:

Can you name all of the countries that were represented by our International Staff this summer?  (Hint: Check out July’s Photo of the Month on camp’s website, www.camppepin.org.)

Congratulations to Kristian Kennedy of Rochester, MN, who correctly identified the following countries (other than the United States):

  1. Canada
  2. England/U.K.
  3. Spain
  4. Scotland
  5. Australia

My game for October is this:

How many meal graces hang on the wall of the Dining Hall?  (Hint: If you don’t remember how many of them you sang before meals this summer, they are pictured in one of the weekly summer camp photos in the Photo Gallery at http://www.camppepin.org/photogallery.htm.)

Email your answer to camp@redwingymca.org.  A winner will be drawn from the entries with the most number of correct answers, and he or she will receive a YMCA Camp Pepin folding camp-out chair from our Camp Store.  The winner’s name and the answer will also be posted in Kimmy’s Korner in the Holiday Issue of The Lakesider.  Anyone can play, including campers, staff, and alumni.  Good luck!
