Fall Issue 2010
Camp Almanac
There is a bit of lingering Summer warmth in the air, but Fall is most definitely here. Many leaves have already fallen, but some that are still clinging to their parent trees have only just begun to change color. The waters of Lake Pepin rose to Spring-time flood levels for a week, but they have since receded. Cooler temperatures are in the forecast, but no snow to speak of yet. Winter stars are beginning to appear in the eastern night sky: the Seven Sisters of the Pleiades, Taurus the Bull, and the mighty hunter, Orion. It won’t be long before Orion’s faithful companion, the dog star Sirius, begins following him into the Winter sky.
Summer Camp is Expanding
With summer enrollment reaching higher levels every year, we’ve been trying to ensure that every boy and girl that wants to attend will have the opportunity to do so. But, with the cabins being filled to capacity and the waiting lists becoming longer, we have come to the point where growth is necessary. So, in 2011, we will be adding an additional week of summer camp to our schedule, which will give campers and their parents another choice and more flexibility on when to attend. The new week will be from August 14th-19th. Registration for all of the weeks of Summer Camp 2011 will begin January 3rd.
Fall Retreats
Although many of our staff and campers see August as the end of camp, there actually is no “end of camp” – we keep our doors open all year-‘round! Our Fall retreat groups begin arriving in late August and we maintain a full schedule until the holidays. Our schedule begins filling again after the new year and carries us through April and May, when we welcome school groups for our Outdoor Education program.
We would like to thank the following groups for allowing us to host them out at camp this Fall:
Tri-County Bar Association
Red Wing Youth Outreach
Carleton College Residence Life
Carleton College Multi-Cultural
Jennifer Radtke Group
First Lutheran Church of Lake City
Minnesota Youth Symphonies
United Lutheran Church of Red Wing
University of Wisconsin, La Crosse – Residence Life
3M
Homestead United Methodist Church of Rochester
Northwest Wisconsin United Church of Christ
Breck School - Minneapolis
If you would like to schedule a retreat at our camp on the shores of beautiful Lake Pepin, please contact Joetta Oien at the Red Wing YMCA office at 651-388-4724 or at joien@redwingymca.org. Our cabins are comfortable and heated, a multitude of outdoor activities are available, and a family-style meal service can be provided. We look forward to seeing you at Camp Pepin!
